AMUSTAY recorded a ¥17,217 one-way gap between Haneda and Incheon

AMUSTAY’s late-August 2026 observations put HND–CMB at ¥56,054 minimum and ¥57,148 average across two one-way observations. ICN–CMB had six observations, with a ¥38,837 minimum and ¥40,488 average. The minimum gap was ¥17,217, about 30.7% below Haneda.

The external market points to almost the same Seoul price floor. Expedia currently shows ICN–CMB from US$239 one way and US$456 round trip.[4] At the publication-day exchange rate, that is roughly ¥38,090 and ¥72,674. In other words, the high-¥30,000 range seen by AMUSTAY is also visible in the current market.

The old ¥60,000-class Nagoya deal versus today’s market

Before the later deterioration in Japan–China relations, AMUSTAY’s operator personally saw China Eastern Nagoya–Shanghai–Colombo round trips around ¥60,000.

Today, Expedia shows China Eastern NRT–CMB from ¥59,800 one way and ¥96,930 round trip.[7] Nagoya’s general Colombo market currently starts around US$633 return, roughly ¥100,883 at publication-day FX.[8]

The dates are different, so this is not a formal inflation comparison. But the contrast helps explain why travellers who remember very aggressive China-connection fares from Japan may find the current Japan-origin floor less exciting.

Japan–China capacity weakened while Korea–China expanded

Reuters reported that China’s major airlines curtailed Japan traffic after the late-2025 travel advisory.[2] Air China, China Eastern and China Southern also extended special free changes and cancellations for Japan-related tickets through 24 October 2026.[3]

Korea–China moved in the opposite direction. In June 2026 the two countries agreed to raise weekly passenger-flight rights from 608 to 664, with high-demand routes such as Incheon–Shanghai specifically highlighted.[1]

For connecting fares to South Asia, that matters. A market with dense feeder capacity into Chinese hubs has more ways to build competitive through itineraries than a market where capacity has been cut.

China Eastern makes the Incheon–Shanghai–Colombo structure particularly strong

China Eastern’s ICN–PVG market is dense. Expedia currently shows the airline from US$147 one way and US$229 round trip between Incheon and Shanghai Pudong.[5]

From Shanghai to Colombo, China Eastern operates about seven nonstop flights per week, and Expedia describes it as one of the route’s strongest price and frequency options.[6]

Expedia’s ICN–CMB route page also says China Eastern offers the most daily itinerary choices on the Seoul–Colombo market.[4] The absolute cheapest option on a particular day may come from SriLankan, Thai AirAsia X, Vietnam Airlines or another carrier, but China Eastern’s network adds substantial competitive supply to the Seoul market.

The practical break-even is about ¥17,200

For a traveller already in Japan, the useful question is not simply “Is Seoul cheaper?” It is whether the saving pays for the positioning trip.

AMUSTAY’s HND minimum was ¥56,054 and ICN minimum ¥38,837. That leaves ¥17,217 for the Japan→Incheon ticket, baggage and airport transport.

If you can position to ICN for less than roughly ¥17,200 all-in, Seoul becomes worth considering on a lowest-fare basis. If the positioning trip costs ¥25,000–¥30,000, the cheaper Colombo fare can easily be cancelled out.

Round trips show the same direction

Expedia currently shows ICN–CMB round trips from US$456, roughly ¥72,674 at publication-day FX.[4] China Eastern’s NRT–CMB round-trip display starts at ¥96,930.[7]

These are not identical travel dates or airline conditions, so the gap is not a permanent rule. But the market direction matches AMUSTAY’s one-way data: Seoul can produce a meaningfully lower floor.

Travellers who already have cheap Japan–Korea access—through an LCC, miles or a Korea stop of their own—have even more reason to search ICN before paying for Sri Lanka.

Japan-origin fares are still competitive

Seoul is not automatically the answer.

AMUSTAY’s HND short-round-trip sample had a ¥103,975 minimum and ¥115,906 average. KIX also produced a ¥103,097 round-trip observation. Expedia currently shows China Eastern NRT–CMB from ¥96,930 return.[7]

So Japan-origin fares around ¥100,000 remain entirely realistic. Once domestic positioning and the risks of separate tickets are included, flying directly from Japan can easily be the better choice.

The best rule is not “go to Seoul.” It is “search Japan and Seoul on the same dates.”

Japan can also compete with Russia-origin Sri Lanka fares

AMUSTAY’s DME–CMB September 2026 round-trip sample contained 30 observations, with a ¥107,423 minimum and ¥133,609 average. HND’s short-round-trip minimum was ¥103,975.

SVO–CMB one way in January 2027 started at ¥56,939, almost the same numerical level as HND’s August minimum of ¥56,054.

The seasons and trip profiles differ, so these are not direct rankings. The useful point is that a traveller already in Japan should not assume Russia or Europe will automatically provide a much cheaper starting point for Sri Lanka.

Tropical beach in Sri Lanka

Hikkaduwa makes Sri Lanka a natural second country after Japan

Hikkaduwa is an official Sri Lanka Tourism destination on the southwest coast.[9]

For a traveller spending several weeks in Japan, the itinerary can be very simple: Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka first, then Colombo and several days by the Indian Ocean.

When Japan–Colombo can be found near ¥100,000 return and Seoul can occasionally push the floor lower, Sri Lanka becomes a realistic extension rather than a completely separate future holiday.

Could the old Nagoya ¥60,000 round trip return?

There is no reliable way to predict that yet.

China Eastern still sells competitive Japan–Colombo fares; the current NRT round-trip display is below ¥100,000.[7] So cheap Chinese-carrier Japan fares have not disappeared.

But the combination of weaker Japan–China capacity, expanding Korea–China rights and a dense China Eastern network from Incheon through Shanghai gives Seoul a structural reason to remain especially competitive. AMUSTAY’s ¥38,837 observation is exactly why ICN deserves to be checked alongside Japanese airports every time.

How to search before booking

  1. Search HND/NRT, KIX and NGO for the same dates.
  2. Search ICN–CMB for those dates too.
  3. Compare the Japan-origin/ICN-origin fare gap.
  4. Add the full Japan→ICN positioning cost, including baggage and airport transport.
  5. Allow extra time if using separate tickets.
  6. Compare baggage-inclusive totals, not headline fares.
  7. Recheck live prices immediately before payment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Japan–Colombo round-trip price?

AMUSTAY recorded HND short round trips from ¥103,975. China Eastern currently shows NRT–CMB from ¥96,930 return, so roughly ¥90,000–¥100,000 is a useful level to compare carefully.

How much cheaper was Incheon in AMUSTAY’s data?

ICN–CMB started at ¥38,837 one way versus ¥56,054 from HND, a ¥17,217 gap.

When is positioning to Seoul worth it?

On the AMUSTAY minimums, the break-even is about ¥17,217. If the whole Japan→ICN positioning trip costs less than that, Seoul becomes worth checking on price.
